parkrun

Many of Barking Road Runners' members take part regularly at parkrun events. These are free, weekly, timed 5K running events that are equally suited to competitive runners and those simply looking for regular exercise in a sociable environment. There are several hundred events worldwide, with around 40 in the Greater London area alone. BRR is particularly well represented at Barking parkrun, which takes place in Barking Park, and at Valentines parkrun, which takes place at Valentines Park, Ilford.

Each parkrun event in England starts at 9 o'clock on a Saturday morning. It's not necessary to register to participate, but registering online via the parkrun website provides a runner with a personal barcode that can be presented after each run to have the runner's name recorded against their time. Registered parkrun athletes can therefore compare their times over the course of many weeks, allowing them to see how they are improving.

In addition to the 5K series, there are also now a growing number of 2K junior parkrun events, for children aged 4–14. The nearest of these to the Barking area are the Barking & Dagenham junior parkrun, based at Central Park, Dagenham, and the Harrow Lodge junior parkrun at Harrow Lodge Park, Hornchurch. Both of these events take place at 9 o'clock each Sunday. Parents are allowed to run with their children, but may not pass through the finishing funnel.

Each parkrun event is organised by volunteers, who can help out as often or as infrequently as they wish. A number of BRR members are Run Directors or Event Directors responsible for the management of an individual parkrun event, and three club members are also parkrun UK Ambassadors.

Consolidated results for all BRR members participating at 5K parkrun events are published weekly by parkrun.
